This is a browser-based pixel-art editor for assembling custom spaceship sprites out of modular parts. Parts are sourced from the "Modular Ships" asset pack by surt on OpenGameArt.org.

Features and controls:

  • Click a part in the palette to select it, click the canvas to place it.
  • Drag placed parts to move them, arrow keys to nudge, H/V to flip, R to rotate.
  • Mirror symmetry with optional clipping at the symmetry line (Bisect).
  • Freehand pencil and eraser touch-up tools
  • Part Editor for drawing custom parts from scratch or editing existing parts.
    • Click the pencil icon on an existing part to edit it. The edited part is saved separately.
  • Importer for using your own parts, including bulk grid-import of a whole sprite sheet at once.* (See below for details)
  • Multi-select editing via Ctrl+click, click-and-drag box select, or Ctrl+A to select all.
  • Multiple canvas tabs, including a duplicate button, so you can work on several designs at once.
  • A ship library for saving and reloading designs.
  • Whole-session save/export to back up or transfer your entire workspace.
  • W/A/S/D pans the camera, Ctrl+scroll zooms.
  • Random Ship button generates a random assembly of parts, following some guidelines to keep the output mostly reasonable.
  • Part palette is resizable by dragging the right edge.
  • The source material had 4 color variants. Swap between them with the 4 colored icons on the toolbar.
  • Separately, adjust the hue with the color slider to get unique color combinations.
  • Export your ship as a PNG with 1x, 2x, 4x, or 8x upscaling.

*Grid Import now supports automatic detection of individual sprites on a sheet, provided they do not touch. If they do touch, they must be organized into a grid of cells of uniform size.
